Simon Marshall is a novelist and memoir writer. He has recently finished work on a book for Peter Luck-Hille, scion of the revolutionary Hille furniture business and Real Tennis court builder extraordinaire. ‘Resting with Peter Luck-Hille: A Memoir’, is produced and designed with his wife, Kambra Clifford, through their publishing company, Old Motor Press.
He is currently working on a biography commission about the life of his father, Prince Marshall, publisher of the ground-breaking magazines Vintage Commercial and Old Motor; a pioneer of the commercial vehicle preservation movement in the U.K; and, in 1973, the first person to operate a private bus service in London since nationalisation in the 1930s.
His historical fiction novels have addressed the impact of imperialism, faith and political ideology on individuals wrestling with the demands of society.
His debut novel, The Long Drawn Aisle, was published in 2015 and was called an “ebullient Dickensian type narrative”, and a “clever mix of satire and passionately epic narrative”. A New Edition was released by Old Motor Press in August 2021, and the author’s foreword can be found in the ‘Articles’ section of this website.
His second novel, The Passing Tribute, was published by Unbound in 2019. It is a sequel to The Long Drawn Aisle. It was praised as “beautifully poetic”, a “book to linger over and enjoy”, with a “complex plot of love and loyalty” that a “classic reader would really enjoy.”
